As Spring begins to peek around the corner, and we are about ready to start turning over the soil for our garden, I am reminded that, for the first time ever, I can grow my own implements.
As I am a tad bit obsessed with being sent outside to fetch a switch, I did a little research on what type of plant is best suited for this purpose.
1. Weeping birch–
This lovely tree in the weeping variety has branches which hang down close to the ground for easy picking, as well as provides the material for a good, classic birching.

2. Willow–
Another classic, the willow tree provides an ample supply of punishing rods.

3. Honeysuckle bush–
Probably the most practical, in that a bush does not take up nearly the space or take quite as long to grow… for those bottoms aching for punishment.

All should be stripped of the leaves and can be used by itself or in a group. Use fresh or if dried, wet them down a little bit for the ultimate sting. What better way to store your implements– in plain sight!

Honeysuckle! Never thought of trying that but there are a hell of a lot of different types of Lonicera, with many different types of branches and woods. If it turns out to be good for purpose it might be worth finding out which one it is.
I’ve always wanted to try (but never had the opportunity to) Cornus alba (Siberian Dogwood). If you prune it hard every spring, it produces long flexible switches, that feel to me like they would be an effective weapon of ass correction. They have a lovely bright red bark colour as well.
